MORNING GALLOPS

Growing up with equestrian as my passion/obsession I have experienced first hand that there is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.

This project touched on the early morning gallops in preparation for the biggest horse race in Africa, the Vodacom Durban July. Rather than highlighting the disgusting aspect of horse racing I wanted to capture the special connection between the trainers and their horses... something that is completely lost in the horse racing industry.

These horses are not just a number... they are companions, personal physiologist and gentle giants... covered in the anxiety, stress and muscle pump that this betting game does to them. Each illustration touches on a moment... it might look like a beautiful pencil illustration, but the story behind the visual and what it really captures sums up the hypocrisy of the sport.
